Third Grade

Third graders will continue to expand their understanding of Language Arts and Mathematics concepts while deepening their knowledge of Science and Social Studies units each quarter. 

In Language Arts, student will-

  • Learn effective communication skills.
  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts, nonfiction, literary nonfiction, and poetry.
  • Expand vocabulary when reading.
  • Write in a variety of forms to include narrative, descriptive, opinion, and expository.
  • Edit writing for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and Standard English.
  • Use knowledge of regular and irregular vowel patterns.
  • Decode regular multisyllabic words.                
  • Use knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, and antonyms to determine the meaning of new words.

In Math, students will explore-

  • Data, time and temperature
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division practical problems
  • Fraction models and practical problems
  • Geometry- defining, identifying, and manipulating polygons.
  • Place value and rounding
  • Estimate and use U.S. Customary and metric units
  • Probability as a measurement of chance

In Science, students will explore-

  • The Scientific Process
  • The life cycle and adaptations of ladybugs
  • The water cycle and understand water is important to life on Earth.
  • The layers and components of soil and how natural events and humans influence ecosystems.
  • The function and format of simple machines

 In Social Studies, students will explore-

  • Ancient civilizations of Egypt, China, Greece, Rome and Mali
  • How the environment shaped the culture
  • The contributions that each civilization made for future generations

Third grade is an exciting year for learners. This is the first-year students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.
